Frequently Asked Questions

What is paper cutting?

Paper cutting is the art of creating images in a sheet of paper by removing excess paper with a knife or other cutting tool. Many different forms of paper cutting have developed all over the world. Traditionally works are created out of one single sheet of paper. My artworks consist of several layers of cut paper assembled together to achieve a sculptural effect.

What type of paper do you use in your work?

Although I use multiple different paper types in my works, my most commonly used papers are the Canson Mi Teintes pastel paper. My choice of paper for each piece is dictated by the image design. I require materials that are sturdy enough to support my delicate cut outs whilst not warping when the works are assembled together. Canson Mi Teintes papers are 160gsm which make them an excellent weight for paper cutting.

Do you use any special cutting tools in your work?

All of my pieces are cut by hand. I use a scalpel knife with a size 11 blade to create my paper cuts. I cut on top of an Alvin self healing mat to preserve the life of my blades. I also use a pair of Excel tweezers to apply small cut out details. I use the Lineco Neutral PH Adhesive to assemble the layers of my work together.

How long does it take for you to complete a piece?

Depending on the piece it takes me anywhere from a month- two months to complete a single work. I work on multiple artworks at the same time so while one piece is drying, I can make progress on another.
